  This is great, but for some reason the "hide star in drop-down arrow" stops working on bookmarks that I load frequently.

  Well, there is no hack needed in order to move the tab close button. You can use the preference Browser.tabs.closeButtons to change the bahavior of that button. Personally, I prefer it with the value of 2, and to close tabs using only the middle mouse button, but it is up to you.
