I used to use this Style with Firefox 2.x but since upgrading to the new FF 3.x it's been completely unusable, until today that is.
Using methods suggested on this site, for some reason they would NOT work.
Various suggestions on this site included using code similar to: url("file:///C:/images/picture.gif");
however the code that WILL work is: url("resource:/images/picture.gif");
After re-trying this on various Styles, it works perfectly, so far in both Menu Background (popup, menupopup) & in Blank Pages (about:blank).
On an update to what ChoGGi mentioned, you don't need to even launch a new Window. In Manage Styles, untick/disable the Style your going to be working on, edit the code with the new address to your files/images, then when you have saved it, tick/enable the Style once more, switch over to your browser & try the function the style is for, & it works.
If some people are still having issues with no image, or an old image, before enabling the style, clear your browser cache first.
I would also suggest creating a seperate image folder, rather than putting all your images in the "res" folder. I've placed my "images" folder as "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\images".
Thanks to LouCypher for a decent Style, which now works again.
As an Addendum, I've tried most image file formats & they all work perfectly.
I have been using this style (very good) in Firefox 1.5 and Firefox 2 with no problems. But it does not work correctly with Firefox 3. The dropmarker border is always visible and does not depress with a mouse click.
Are there any plans to update this style for Firefox 3?
it's close but can we have it so it shows the status bar when you hover over a link (or if possible if you hover over a link while holding down the alt key)
Love it! Thanks. Strange. For the first time (and with FF3) I changed max height from 300 to 400px. When right clicking, a duplicate truncated option window appears in the upper left corner of the browser, partially masking and forbidding access to about 4 to 5 buttons in menu- & tool bars and to a few tabs. Had to reload FF3 to get rid of it. Works absolutely fine again with 300px.
Nice idea... but doesn't work properly... Yes I get the scrollbar, but when i grab the bar and moves it downwards (or upwards), then as soon as I move it just a little, the dropdown box disappears and I now have the pointer with a square that you get when you drag a link. So only way I can use this style is by clicking the arrows (goes very slow) or click on the areas were the bar isn't and then jump around. This does go faster than without the style, but it is an annoying, unprecise and buggy way of doing it. Would be nice if you could grab the bar, like you normally can when browsing websites. Can you please fix this? Cause it is a very great idea, just to bad it doesn't work properly and there aren't any other alternative styles that you could try :(. Also tried the extension 'Bookmarks Scrollbar ', here: https://addons.mozilla.org/da/firefox/addon/2600 , but that contains the exact same bug as this style does
I'm using FF 2.0.0.12 on a mac os 10.5.2 and it doesn't work. It only has small blue colors on the top corners of the tab. Does anyone experience the same thing?
This....is so awesome. For one, it's adorable. Two, it's awesome. A little tricky to implement, but just reading the other reviews and playing for 5 minutes will set it up nice, and it's just awesome. I'd add some of the more helpful reviews to the description here to make them permanent, since those are a great help. awesome job man.
Well thanks to Choggi, and also using the custom buttons2 extension, if anyone want to have a sliding menubar for thunderbird, you can use the following:
LouCypher, would you pls fix something about the incompatibility with CustomizeGoogle addon? The favicon is wrongly shown after using this style. Pls help, thanks! :)
However I'd like to ask for a help. I found that it automatically hides any pull down menu coming from the toolbar buttons when mouse hovers to select an option from the pull down menu list below the toolbar, such as using DownloadHelper button or Smart Bookmark Bar button or Tab Mix Plus manage session button. These buttons seems becoming unselectable by mouse for now.
Could the pull down menu stay still for normal selection pls?
It works, it's certainly comedic, and while it doesn't have any real use, it is a rather cool style that completely changes the about:mozilla page. Good use of content I'd say.
Awesome! My favourite colour is neon blue...of course not that I ever found a FF neon blue style, but now I have a lovely neon blue active fab, and am thusly very happy indeed!
Thank you for this very handy style! I have a large monitor so I changed the max-height to 1100px to remove the scrollbar when a bookmark folder's entries fit on the screen. I have a 'Misc' folder that goes on forever, so now it's much easier to see all the entries by just using the mouse scroll button instead of the arrows.
Thank You--I like what this script does very much. I have one problem with it --when I click a drop down menu on an auto- hidden toolbar I can't use the portion that is below the toolbars without the menu I'm trying to use disappearing along with the toolbars. This happens with the Stylish dropdown menu for instance. It does not happen with all the drop down menues however, so I'm wondering if this can be fixed.
nevermind... i just found ctrl-m to pull stylish settings up.
here's what i want to do. maybe someone can solve the problem:
I want to load three styles: Auto-Hide Toolbar, Menubar AutoHidden, and Toolbar Show/Hide. but when i use all three, nothing appears when i move the cursor over the toolbars. It seems i can use any combination of two but not all three.
Woow thank you very much... you should do something like this for download status bar extension..(yep you cant use gradients this good on that extension jeje)
thedoorman I would love to give this a 5 star, if only the scroll bar was on the left side. (edit) Had to come back and change this to 5stars I asked for help in the forum and had the help within min. Thanks for makin' this one LouCypher
my only suggestion would be that the navigator toolbar should be shown if you have focus such as after pressing Ctrl+L to select the address bar or Ctrl+K to select the search bar. For someone like me who tries to use only the keyboard as much as possible, using this style doesn't disable my ability to avoid the mouse, but I can't see what I'm typing in the address bar.
Thanks JuanBR, but that seems to create a permanent hover area which takes up almost as much space as the actual status bar. @LouCypher: Apparently I haven't. How inexcusable of me.
I like the idea that JuanBR threw out there, the ability to have the bar appear when mousing over a link (to see what URL the link points to) until it can do that, I won't be using it. it's a great concept though. I already use autohide sidebar, toolbar show/hide, and sliding menubar
**********I love the idea! I was wondering if you could create another style of it with Black background and Lime green Text and have the background change red when hovered over it. I'm a noob to stylish so i'm not all to sure how or which colors to change in order to achieve this affect. Thanks in advance for any help anyone could provide! **********
Edit Begin: Cleaned the code as per kyou's suggestion. kyou: I am sorry for that mess. I am not a prolific programmer. Am just learning the ropes. I had discovered that effect by trial and error. Have corrected it now. Edit End.
what you will get is an invisible slider for the Menubar. To use it optimally, Shift all the Navigation Bar items to the Menu Bar in such a way that the Menu Items are to the Right-Most end or Left-Most end (as you prefer)... then use this code to hide the menu bar. Now hover with your mouse at whichever end (right or left) you had placed your Menu Items. Menu Items will show up.
E D I T . B E G I N : achilles, let’s keep the code clean! T H I S … » background-image: url("image") !important; /*::: Do not provide a valid URL here, leave it as it is :::*/ background-repeat: no-repeat !important; background-position: 1px center !important;« … D O E S . N O T . M A K E . S E N S E ! What you want, works without the lines, I quoted!
And for the case, that you want to have your own embedded background-image, have a look at http://www.motobit.com/util/base64-decoder-encoder.asp
E D I T . E N D *******************************************************
A slight modification cause of the accesskeys, which are not available anymore, if you use the display-property »none«. And the background-image becomes removed on hover and the padding reseted.

»Really great, but I was wondering, is there a way to make the "bookmarks" menu always visible ?«
Probably yes, if you position the bookmarks menu absolute. But I think, that a better alternative would be, if you use a sliding bookmarks-sidebar. That is easier to do:
Really great, but I was wondering, is there a way to make the "bookmarks" menu always visible ? (Sorry, but i'm totally new to stylish stuff, just discovering many wonderfull things this evening ;))
Hmm, this made my menu go on the right, and your screenshot shows it on the left. I fixed it myself, but anyway, good job. Also, it seems you're missing a few !important's...might want to fix that.
Awesome. Even if it just removed that banner at the top, which sucked almost as bad as not having a search field anywhere but the main page, though got rid of that myself anyway. The fixed side panel was a nice touch.
The "\0d\0a" doesn't work, everything runs together. It also can mess up the character following the sequence. Add a space after all "\0a" (except when immediately followed by another "\0d\0a" sequence) to correct this.
Is there a way to get rid of the original "about:mozilla" text? The original text is intermingled with the new text.
i like it... however, is it possible to display only the URL and cached/similar links in the hovering table and leave the result excerpt on the google results page?
Really nice. I like it. I'd like it more if clicking the Fx icon just opened a "temp" menu bar overlay (sorta like a context menu) that looks and functions as usual--no sliding, just more permanent space for more extension buttons/icons. Another style?
Very cool. I had recently been thinking, "gee, I wish I could remove those addon descriptions from the search results". Now, I'm wondering, when I'm 'next paging' through the results, if the page can be positioned with the "Search Results" at the top of the display? Even more cool. Possible?
I have been searching for a fix like this for so long. It really irritated me the way Firefox incorrectly rendered the drop list feature on the back and foward buttons.
The style you have provided looks and works perfectly on my browser.
if your having trouble getting a picture on your drive showing up put the picture in program files\firefox\res, then change the url to ("resource:/res/picture.png")
also you dont need to restart ff just open a new window
brilliant. it should show highlight for hover/active to keep with all other buttons. and the one thing that would make it stupendous: mouseover on File etc would expand the menu (it's ok to get into userchrome.js for this ;).
good idea but ... i use small icons and this mod causes the toolbar to increase in size vertically when the throbber is active ... as this happens with every new page, the toolbar is in a constant state of expansion/contraction and i find it very distracting.
update: thanks for adding throbber graphics to the code ... completely solved the problem ... i also use it with stop/reload ... great!
I use the stop/reload combo script, and have now incorporated this as well. It works great! I used to remove the throbber altogether; however combined with stop/reload (& small icons) and this script, it's a terrific functional space saver. Despite using toolbar height reducing, this does not make anything "swell" on my screen; it's just effectively created a "3 function single button!" Super job Lou, especially for those who don't want status bar!
Works perfect, but the progress bar color changed from green (used Fission extension) to purple. Fission won't change back to green, or any other color I choose. Any help?
Nuts!! Anyone else still trying to load a photo from their hd? I tried it as written by jasir and auctuz, but no go. Cool idea, wish I could get it to work. My gf is unbelievably shy, and says she doesn't want her photo uploaded to a website ...sheesh!
Finally got it to work!!! Found the problem. I had to use " url(file:///d:/1.jpg) " instead of a direct drive letter to load the picture from my local HDD. Also, you need to close and reload FF everytime you modify the script for the picture to load.
This style would be even handier if it could hide extensions from the drop down menu from mr tech local install - especially the ones that despite having options one almost never accesses - do you think you could do something like that ?
nice but it doesn't hide all toolbars e.g. WebDeveloper in fact i only like it with sambody's modifications because you can't jump to the urlbar with F6 when it's hidden. Anybody knows how to hide also plugin toolbars?
