  Me too! I was able to come up with code myself for the old version of Gmail but I can't fathom this new version at all. Thank you for this!

  Updated: 4.12.07: this has stopped working, as of today, with the introduction of Gmail's new coloured labels feature.

  Updated: 11.12.07: this code (http://userstyles.org/styles/4346) can be used to do much the same thing by adding background colour CSS to the code. :)
