** May 10 - Contact Page Fixed **

Gmail's anti-spam technology, its thread messages, and its general simplicity has made it quite simply the best webmail service around. But I think we can all agree - Google's design team is either incredibly lazy or extremely concerned with making sure old people, and people still using Netscape can check their email. To be frank - it's ugly and looks very outdated. Here is a Gmail design that I deem appropriate for a service of such quality. I am calling this project Gmail redesigned.

This style can be used by other designers who wish to develop custom themes for Gmail. For the developer's version of the style with Comments and Indentation use: http://www.naverniouk.com/design/gmail/gmail_dev.css

All suggestions and feedback are greatly appreciated. Please leave a comment here, or feel free to email me at globexdesigns(at)gmail(dot)com

Currently only tested in "New Version" of Gmail using English (US). Multi-language support is coming very soon.

Not supported with the "Better Gmail 2" or the "Remember The Milk" extensions. Support for these extensions will be added in the future. "GTD Inbox" will most likely not be supported as it doesn't use default Gmail conventions.

For best results and performance, use Firefox 3.

If you wish to use the latest version of the style and be able to receive automatic updates when new versions are released please follow these steps:

1. Install Stylish

2. Go to one of the following:

Official: http://www.naverniouk.com/design/gmail/gmail.css
Mirror: http://www.s-c-u-m.com/globex/gmail.css (Thanks Alex)

3. Right-click the Stylish icon in the bottom left hand corner of the Firefox window and choose "Add Style to Stylish".

So beautiful !

By the way, there is a small problem with toolbar buttons (Archive, Report Spam, ...), the "more actions" list and refresh buttons. The width/height of the normal and hover state is not quite equal (the "second" border is missing)
I made a simple fix, just add:

border-width: 2px !important;

for the :hover state of these buttons, it works fine (sorry I don't remember the css classes used for them)

Thank you for this great work !

*edit, May 6*

I don't know what you made with the 2 last updates, but the CSS file has no new line (everything is on a single line), no indent and no comment. What happened ? Maybe you should fix newlines for readability. Sorry I didn't see there was a dev version...

By the way, the correct URL for the dev style is http://www.naverniouk.com/design/gmail/gmail_dev.css

SleepingGhost <

1: No, except "rich formatting" button (rich editor turned off) goes a bit off its bar.
2: Can't test.

The May 7 dev update contains a truncated file. Be careful !
(Maybe the official one too)

An absolutely stunning display. You've done a beautiful job with it. I've been reviewing software on-line since 1982 and this would rank with some of the best things I've seen. To gain wide acceptance it will have to be able to support Better Gmail 2 and RTM. When it does that, I'll personally promote it for free. Keep up the amazing work.

I absolutely love this! The best, most visually compelling combination, balance of colors, hues. I highly recommend GMail Redesigned and the addition of installing the new palette for colored labels by Moktoipas that expands on the Gmail default selection of colors for labels *****

As everyone else has stated, this is an awesome still, and I love it, I use it across 4 computers, so manually updating it got to be a pain. You can have it automatically update to the latest alpha version easily by just opening up the stylish.rdf file in your profile folder with a text editor, searching for RDF:about="http://userstyles.org/styles/5867", then changing the line after that, which should start off stylish:updateURL="http://userstyles.org....", to stylish:updateURL="http://www.naverniouk.com/design/gmail/gmail.css". Again though, great style, hope to one day be able to have the same style for Google Reader *hint hint* *****

Small problem with this last update: now all email text, while reading, is being set to black, even when you're reading an HTML formatted email with different text colors.
That makes my boss pissed at me because "the company name must always be in orange, not black. Blah blah blah blah". I know is just on my screen, but he's not very good on the whole "comprehension" aspect.

And I see the update log saying about main menu icons... I did notice the menu options shifting a little to the right when I updated the style, but no icons are being shown.

I must say that, while I love the style and don't really see myself without it anymore, it does make the whole interface a little less responsive, at least on this crap-tastic computer I'm using. It's more when scrolling that everything seems slower, but it's not a deal breaker. Just thought I should point that out.

As always, thanks for making my work easier on the eyes. ;)

To manually update your style:
* Open the link on this page for the desired stylesheet (alpha or latest stable; I think they are currently the same); Select All and copy to the clipboard
* Right-click on the Stylish icon (should be on the bottom right of the Firefox window) and select Manage Styles; or go to menu Tools > Add-ons, then Extensions tab, select Stylish from the list and click Options.
* At the Manage Styles window, select Gmail Redesigned (by Globex Designs), and click the Edit button
* Select everything on that window, and paste the updated CSS over the previous code.
* Click save, and go have fun. ;) *****

I think that the blue color in "Contacts List" is not compatible of the global chart you used for other modules.

Excellent work!

When do you expect to support GTDInbox and Remember the Milk.

tcustomgolf:

you need to turn off any font size scripts and accept the default font size from within the style itself. Use Firefox's font options - Tools/Options, instead.

SpryCorpse:

Light green opens as default on all my labels, but I can easily change the colors in the labels box. This is also the case when making a new label. *****

But, when I compose an email, and I start typing a contact in the To:, many contacts popup based on the letters I am typing, but they are not viewable. I get multiple scroll bars stacked on on top of each other, and it seems the contacts are behind those scroll bars, so they are not selectable.

Pretty, but I still think it's a little boxy, and the text is hard to read where OS != Windows. Also, I don't get why you're using cryptic class identifiers instead of class names where possible. Can you add this snippet for RTM4Gmail?

/* Buckets */
.rtm-task-list-bucket {
background: transparent url('http://www.naverniouk.com/design/gmail/chat-search.gif') repeat-x top left !important;
border-top: 4px solid #121212 !important;

I love this new skin for Gmail. This is my favorite skin yet. May I make just two suggestions though.......1) Please re-design the 'Contacts' listing. As it stands now, the way you have it, it looks exactly the same as the same-old-boring unimpressive Gmail default graphical web userface. Please change this, so that the 'Contacts' listing would have the same kind of dynamic graphical interface as the of this awesome skin. And, 2) Is there any way to hide the bold spam count?

Thanks, and thanks again for this wonderful new skin. Keep up the great work! *****

Gave it a three, because aesthetically it is fantastic. But it altogether breaks gmail addons (greasemonkey script) which made me have to disable it. Sucks because I really like the visuals. But instant access to my calendar is a must! So, I guess function over fashion. ***

Great.
It looks great.

Small suggestion. Could you change the "color" of the labels so they stand out a bit more, when they have unread mail in them. When using filters with gmail, some mail go directly to certain labels and are archived.
It is nice to view the ones that have unread mail in very quickly without having to focus on reading each label individually.

Regards

I'm still having a problem in Reply mode, though. Now, the text box is fine and inputtable, but the graphic for all of the formatting buttons (the RTF ones) is the one for the bold formatting button. I agree. Very good. I look for updates everyday. Keep up the good work.
Today's update has the "the label has been removed" banner that will not go away and overlaps all the other buttons in the vicinity.

I live by the Better Gmail macros, but so far they seem to be working well with the script.

I have only one other style going, that is, to move the "printer, forward all, new window" etc to the top of the open email to gain the space on the right hand side. The colors are wrong with your color scheme though. I'ld love to see you take a crack at that since you really have an eye as to how it should all go together.

Again, keep up the good work!!
Thank you. *****

The task toggle on RTM shows up scrollbars (apparently text size has nothing to do with this bug) and causes scrollbars in place of text. In Compose/Email, the same effect occurs when entering text input in the TO: section. This requires reducing font size under 12px, which is way too small for me to view.

Your design updates are fantastic and I am actually encouraged to use my gmail web interface over thunderbird. Good job, Ev! *****

First off, thanks for all of your effort on this gmail skin. It beats the hell out of any of the skins I've seen so far. This would be a definite 5-star, but it has 2 somewhat minor problems:

1. as mtrichards said, the domain version of gmail does not display the upper-lefthand links (start page, mail, calendar, documents, sites, etc.) as skinned
2. it seems to eliminate the package tracking and address mapping features that appear at the right when you have a tracking # or an address within the body of the e-mail. This is one of the cooler features of gmail...would be great if those could be kept in while the ads are kept out (or have an option to display that righthand bar since better gmail 2 also filters those ads but not the tracking/mapping links) ****

This is a difficult site to remaster. I think what you've done so far is very thorough and internally cohesive. I also like that your color modifications haven't created the same ugly effect around the "stars" like many other styles do. *****

This looks like it's going to be great! The only thing that sticks out for me after all the updates is the white box at the bottom where it says how much space you're using and whatnot... ****
