Adds numbers 1-9 on tabs.
(CTRL+[1-8] selects tab; CTRL+9 selects the last one. http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/keyboard )
Draft. Working, but I suppose some improvements are possible.
Based on: http://boxofchocolates.ca/archives/2004/09/17/numbered-tabs-for-firefox
Updates
2007-11-06 ( v0.2 )
- image reworked into one "css sprite" (see the "before" image; courier new; not so pretty but functional)
- contoured glyphs: to be distinguishable on any background
2007-11-08
- obsoleted, comment by rio
2008-11-26
- un-obsoleted: it actually works in FF3 : ) thanks Firefox - Numbered Tabs for letting me know
Notes:
- if you don't like concrete font / colours used, save the image below and edit it yourself (I've created it in Paintbrush, reduced colours and set transparency in IrfanView) and embed it via "Inset dataURI" in Stylish dialog
- screen-shot is mainly affected by:
1) excellent "Page Style to Tab" extension (by http://membres.lycos.fr/sethnakht/ )
2) "Mnifox Flat" theme by the same author
3) "Faviconize Tab" extension ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3780 )
- it is possible that this style will remove some tab "border" in certain themes. EG in Whitehart theme it will replace separators between inactive tabs.
- if you want it more 'stylish', you may try "Fancy Numbered Tabs" extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5861
Notes regarding FF2:
I have found this can only work thanks the Page style to tab extension, which removes default chrome styling and allows others to work. Until I find how to force userstyle to override default chrome style, this will be obsoleted. ( "-moz-appearance: none !important;" does not work for me.) If you really want this functionality right NOW, you may use the "Fancy Numbered Tabs" extension, find a modified version of variant from boxofchocolates.ca, install "Page Style to Tab" extension which will make this userstyle work, or learn to count to nine.

Hey, cool! I've searched userstyles.org for a style like this several times. I finally gave up and made Firefox - Numbered Tabs because I figured nobody had done it, but it looks like I just fail at searching. (:
Cool stuff! Nice idea using CSS sprites. (: I went with GIFs because the base64 versions were smaller, but yours look nicer, and on more themes too. Thanks for creating this style!
it doesn't work, and I see no number displayed. Does it work with Tab Mix Plus? pls help.
