I wrote a similar userstyle for Engadget:
Engadget - Minus Garbage Plus Width (Dec 2011)
Removed:
* entire right column (including 2 ads)
* top and bottom banner ads
* ad in the upper right up main stories and article pages
* places to buy ad at the top of article pages (shows 3 stores and their prices)
* forum ads
* rotating header bar of 3 recent "big news" topics
* facebook 'like' button
Changed:
* widened the blogroll and article content to fill the now hidden right column's space
* widened comments, kept replies tiered/threaded
* centered article pictures, blockquotes, numbered lists, and bullet lists
* widened bench page
* widened thumbs box for gallery page
Not Changed:
* text sizes
* fonts
* pictures/logos
* background/text colors

Changes:
12/24/11- think i finally solved all the image centering issues, killed some more ads, moved whole page up to use removed banner space, right aligned G+ box, other minor cleanup and fixes
6/10/11- fixing image centering in articles; a little better now, still a rare unruly image
2/7/11- centered tables in articles
12/10/10- found a better way to center images while still avoiding those rare, crazy-off-the-page images
11/1/10- trying different approach to image centering, initial results look good, leave a comment with a link to any skewed or not centered images
10/7/10- image-centering fixes
8/19/10- minor tweaks
7/13/10- adjusted blockquotes, numbered lists, and bullet-point lists on both articles and blogroll. adjusted lots of widths and spacing to match stock sizes
