Hide Gmail chat status messages in buddy list - Themes and Skins for Google

I've found that the option in Labs still leaves a bit of extra space when a status message would normally be displayed. This hides it completely.

To use this style, install Firefox and Stylish. If you already have Stylish, make sure this site is allowed to run JavaScript.
