I just migrated to Google Reader and found the Google Reader ("Slate Series") style.
The colors were too bold for me and a few other bits and pieces (the sidebar background image, the hidden manage subscriptions etc) I thought could be changed so I made some adjustments.
- Changed how read/unread posts are displayed.
- To remove the autohide: Remove the "AutoHide Nav Stuff" section

Install options
- Install Stylish for Firefox, Thunderbird, Flock, Mozilla Suite, SeaMonkey, or Songbird. If you have Stylish already, make sure you're using the latest version and have JavaScript enabled.
- You need Firefox with Stylish to use this style. Get it now, then Install Stylish, then come back here to install this style.
- - load into the Stylish extension where you can preview and save it.
- - this style has been updated since you installed it in Stylish.
- - Greasemonkey and Opera users can load this style as a user script.

this has stopped functioning properly for me as of today - whole menu has shifted over to the right side, with left side blank. anyone else confirm, or is this just me?

Looks great. I agree with both previous posters though. I like to be able to remove the autohide feature. Somethis the read becomes too wide with it, and I don't like reading all over the screen. But in listview the hide feature is excellent, making it easy to scan through a number of short items in very short time.

Just what I was looking for! It would be sweet if the unread posts had a slightly gray background to more easily differentiate them from the "read" items. Other than that, it's great.
